Yoga is peace, freedom, and fun.   ~Jasmine C.

How long have you been practicing yoga?
I started in my early college years, I’ll say around 2007.

What type of yoga do you practice?
I mostly practice Hatha or a gentle flow.

Do you attend classes or are you self-taught?
I’ve visited multiple studios and taken various classes and workshops over the years in addition to practicing at home. So I would say, it’s a blend of both.

How did you discover yoga?
I discovered yoga by selecting it as an elective course in college; I thought it would be easy, my goodness was I wrong. But I did develop a love affair.

How often do you practice?
I try to practice daily, even if it’s only for a few minutes in my favorite poses, studying, or taking time out to focus on my breathing.

What have you learned throughout your journey?
I have learned that yoga is much deeper than postures. Over the years, the postures became less important to me. I began to see yoga as a healing vehicle for the mind and the body. In a sense, it’s a vacation on a mat. You get from it whatever you need to.

What do you find most challenging?
I’m human, so I have to remind myself that yoga is not a competition sport. I don’t need to focus on my neighbor and why I’m not as flexible as that person or my teacher. I remind myself to keep the focus on me and the reward that I’m giving to my mind and body.

What do you think about the increase of black women getting into yoga?
I love it and I want to see more of it! We come in all shapes and sizes, and yoga fits it all. It’s wonderful that there are so many social media pages and hashtags that celebrate Black women and yoga.

How important is it for you to see diversity in yoga?
I think it is crucial to not only see diversity in yoga but also continue to push for it. One of my personal goals was to become a certified yoga teacher so that I can service the minority and underserved communities. It’s important to me to reach as many people as I can. I want them to know that yoga is one-size fits all, meaning it’s for every one.

Anything else you would like to share?
I am currently in yoga teacher training and graduate within a couple of months. My goals are to work with women in all stages of life, especially conception and pre and postnatal care. I also want to work with people who may need yoga for healing purposes but above all, I want to make yoga accessible for everyone.
